A crown covers a tooth to restore its shape, strength and appearance. It may be recommended when a tooth is badly broken, has a large filling, is worn, has had root canal treatment or needs support for a bridge. A bridge is a fixed replacement for one or more missing teeth and is supported by neighbouring teeth or implants.

Planning your restoration

• Your dentist assesses the tooth, gums and bite and may take X-rays.
• Different materials and designs are discussed based on strength, appearance and location.
• The supporting tooth or teeth are prepared when required.
• An impression or digital scan is taken and a temporary restoration may be fitted.
• The final crown or bridge is checked for fit, appearance and bite before bonding.

Caring for crowns and bridges

Brush twice daily and clean carefully around the gumline. A bridge also needs cleaning under the replacement tooth using floss threaders, interdental brushes or another method recommended by your dentist. Avoid using restored teeth to bite very hard objects and attend regular checks.

Does a crown protect the tooth forever?
