Inside each tooth is soft tissue called the pulp. Deep decay, cracks, trauma or repeated dental treatment can inflame or infect it. Root canal treatment removes the affected tissue, cleans and disinfects the internal canals, and seals the space so the tooth can remain in the mouth.

Signs that may need assessment

• Persistent or severe toothache.
• Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold.
• Pain when biting.
• Swelling, a gum spot or a bad taste.
• A deeply decayed, cracked or discoloured tooth.

Some teeth that need root canal treatment have few symptoms and are detected during examination or on a dental X-ray.

What happens during treatment?

After the tooth is numbed, an opening is made so the canals can be cleaned, shaped and disinfected. The canals are then filled and sealed. Treatment may take one or more visits, and a temporary filling may be used between appointments. Because a root-filled tooth can be weakened, a crown or other protective restoration is sometimes recommended.

After treatment

Mild tenderness can occur for a short time. Avoid heavy chewing on the tooth until the final restoration is complete, keep the area clean and attend the planned review. Contact us if pain or swelling is severe or worsening.

Is root canal treatment painful?

Local anaesthetic is used. The aim is to relieve the pain caused by inflammation or infection.

Can every tooth be saved?

No. Severe cracks, inadequate tooth structure or poor support may make extraction more predictable.

Will I need a crown?

It depends on the tooth and how much structure remains. Back teeth often benefit from additional protection.
