Scaling removes these deposits from around the teeth and gumline, while polishing helps smooth the tooth surfaces and lift many everyday surface stains.

If gum pockets are deeper or there are signs of gum disease, your dentist may recommend a more thorough cleaning below the gumline rather than a routine scale and polish.

After your cleaning

Your mouth may feel unusually clean and some teeth can be temporarily sensitive, especially if there was significant tartar buildup. Continue brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between the teeth every day. Your dentist will suggest a recall interval suited to your gum health and risk factors.
